Memory Keeper's Daughter: Favorite characters

I thought it might be easier to have a conversation here if all of the questions were separated out and we could fill in comments for each one, or maybe just the ones that "grabbed" us.

So, the first question is "who is your favorite character and why?"

I have to say that my favorite character is probably Rosemary, though I'm at a loss to say exactly why. Her sudden entrance into the novel, about halfway through, was surprising -- and yet, it seemed inevitable and completely right. She seemed to present all kinds of missed opportunities -- the chance for David, and perhaps even Norah, to connect with a daughter figure -- and yet the way she was drawn, she was more than just a symbol of something, but a fascinating individual in her own right ... who eventually refused to play a supporting role in anyone else's story but left this story in order to be the main character in her own life.

My boring answer is Caroline. For the time period, she took a lot of risks as a woman, and a single mother.
